Volunteer Needed
This year marks the 96 year anniversary of the traditional May Pole Dancing and parade in Fort Langley.
Coghlan is one of the remaining two schools that still participates in this tradition and the only school with a float in the May Day parade. I have had the pleasure of organizing the float for the last few years. Sadly, with my kids leaving the school this will be my last year. I’m looking for someone to work alongside me this year, to learn how it’s done and take over for future years.
The following is a list of what the position details:
Jan – by email register for the parade.
Feb – adjust the already created permission form for the current year. Make copies at school, request an announcement for participation, collect signed forms and organize group email with parents, for information updates.
Arrange for someone to pick up May pole from the Lions club in Fort Langley. I have contact info.
If interested, you’re welcome to come to practices and learn the dances to assist with teaching the kids, otherwise Mrs. Clogg tends to run the practices. We love parent assistance at practices, especially with the little ones. Practices run in the gym during lunch two times a week.
May – Organize float trailer and truck, with someone to pick up. I have the contact info for the trailer.
-Update the already created final May Day information sheet and skirt deposit information. Copy and distribute.
-Find someone with hay that you can borrow for the kids to sit on.
-Full run is always the Thursday evening before May Day weekend in Fort Langley.
-Parade normally starts at 11 am on Monday morning. I always go early to register and set up the float. Decorations are at the school. Families are wonderful at pitching in.
-After dancing I dismantle the float (Dads tend to do it) and organize for everything to go back to where I borrowed it.
-Return skirt deposits as skirts are returned.
June– Purchase a gift from PAC for the princess, to be given at year end assembly.
I have a book with all the information to pass on. It would be sad to see this tradition stop due to no volunteers. If you’re interested, please contact me (Sandy Jesiak) at 604 862-9978 or sjesiak2@gmail.com.
